It saddens me to say that ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, is a myth. Stars only appear to twinkle! But do not despair as this is certainly not the case when it comes to Starlight, the all new show for the 2015 season here at the Babbacombe Theatre. Our cast will assuredly add some twinkle to a show that promises to glisten from start to finish and, with the venue being in receipt of the Trip Advisor's Certificate of Excellence Award for three years running, and regularly featuring as the ‘Number 1’ visitor attraction in Torquay, you can be confident that the entertainment factor is real and in no way matches the old nursery rhyme myth.
Headlining in Starlight is Phil Lowen who returns after making an impact in 2013. Phil is one of the UK’s most successful comedy impressionists with an act that is zany, energetic, very visual and always hilarious. Joining Phil on stage is the man of many voices, Ben Nickless - a genuinely funny and versatile performer who along with Phil and the other performers will have you in wonderment with the, ‘Stars In Their Eyes’.
Celestial singing sensation is international vocalists Keedie. She is just as adept at interpreting a pop song as she is the most opulent of arias. Listen to her sing and suddenly the ordinary becomes extraordinary! With, Babbacombe favourite, West End vocalist Paul Cobley also able to pitch towards the heavens, expect to be whisked away, as if heading towards the horizon on an ‘Express’ Locomotive' when these two invite you, through an open door! Add to that the wonderful voice of Lisa Walker and the talent of effervescent personality Wayne Champagne into the mix, and the twinkle suddenly becomes a supernova experience.
Starlight celebrates the very best of the old and the new musicals. The old, though still much loved and popular are Starlight Express and Love Never Dies. The new, on the other hand encompasses great show songs from productions that are currently doing very well in London’s West End, such as Memphis and the long time show stopper The Commitments. In contrast, there will be also be some classic pop numbers incorporated into the mix by world renowned and well loved artistes Ollie Murs and Rihanna respectively.
And we have also gone international with a much loved classic performed in Italian! Danze Chique, the resident team of dancers, are a bevy of gorgeous young ladies who continue to raise the standard every season. There is never a moment where their flame ever dims, as they embellish the Babbacombe boards with their energetic display. With choreographer Georgia Lee creating the fabulous routines and our very own Musical Director, Pete Leonard, orchestrating the accompaniment, everyone gets the chance to shine.
The team here at the Babbacombe Theatre encourage children to take to the stage and this season is no exception as we have brought together a fabulous group of up and coming young stars, Kidz & Co. They will not only add a bit of eastern spice to the show they will also be taking you back in time with a bit of Boogie Woogie, whilst showcasing a child star! Can you guess who it is? Starlight is an ideal way to enjoy an evening of top class comedy, song and dance amongst a constellation of 'stars' doing what they all do best and that is entertaining you. However, without an audience we could not continue to produce and direct the shows so it cannot go unsaid. All of us here at the Babbacombe Theatre would like to thank you for your support and for attending. It's because of you that we can keep theatre alive in the English Rivera.
There has been an absolute abundance of amazing entertainers appearing at this quaint, and delightfully bijou little theatre over the years - with international superstars along with resident performers such as Phil Lowen, Paul Cobley, Dean Winters and sensational singing star Keedie to name just a few gracing the annals of its celebrity seasoned interior. And this year's rollicking extravaganza is no exception as Colin Matthews, Pete Leonard and Georgia Lee's spectacular production of Starlight takes to the theatre's stage.
This season's star studded cast includes Ben Nickless who, after having much success in talent shows, and several seasons as a bluecoat, became a professional comedian in 2003. Ben is also in great demand working alongside stars such as Christopher Biggins and Su Pollard and not forgetting, of course, none other than David Hasselhoff. Another star of this seasons fine production on the Babbacombe Theatre stage is the many talented and all rounder Paul Cobley, who is no stranger to the world of entertainment after having played roles in many notable productions such as Danny in Grease and in Oliver, the role of Fagin.
Another fine act is Phil Lowen - one of the top comedy impressionists in the United Kingdom with an act as zany and energetic as the man himself. Phil decided to go solo in 1989 when he was offered a long season in Jersey that had the critics raving about this new comedy find. And then there's Wayne Champagne who is now quite a veteran at the Babbacombe Theatre. In 2007 Wayne made his pantomime debut playing the part of Buttons in Cinderella. Renowned for his wild, clean and cheeky stage act he is just the type of guy that audiences never tire of, which he proved when playing the part of host for the 'West End Now' show.
Which brings us on to two amazing performers Keedie and Lisa. Keedie, of course, is also a theatre veteran and no stranger to the Babbacombe boards. She first appeared at the Babbacombe Theatre in her own show 'For One Night Only' in 2009 and later returned as a special guest judge for Torbay's Got Talent. Keedie has topped the charts with the song I Believe My Heart, which she was asked to perform and duet with Duncan James, from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Woman In White. More recently, in February 2015, Keedie auditioned for the BBC TV show The Voice where she performed the song Titanium.
And then there is the talented and beautiful Lisa Walker who began singing when she was just thirteen years old and regularly performed in local productions with the school choir. Lisa's pantomime roles include the part of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Prince Charming in Cinderella. She also performs on the cabaret circuit as a soloist and also as part of the duo Chique. And last, but very definitely not least, we are extremely delighted to have in our midst an amazing troupe of dancers who go by the name of Danze Chique. Ten fabulous girls who are sure to set the night on fire with their breathtaking performance and, of course, the youngest members of our line up 'Kidz And Co' - destined without doubt to be stars of the future.
